Exposure to emotional abuse changes how the brain learns, feels and connects.

We can break the cycle it creates

What is emotional abuse?

Verbal, psychological and emotional abuse happen when a person, child or adult, is repeatedly criticized, shamed, neglected, or controlled by someone they depend on for safety / survival.

Even without physical violence, this kind of treatment interferes with health and brain development.

In the moment, it creates fear, confusion, and a sense of worthlessness. For example, a child might learn to stay alert for danger instead of feeling safe and curious.

Over time, this constant stress reshapes how the brain handles emotion and threat. It can make it hard to manage stress, trust others, or feel secure in relationships. These effects often appear as anxiety, depression, or difficulty succeeding in school or work.

And these are not personal failures.

They are the developmental results of long-term emotional harm and that’s what we call emotional abuse.

How do we prevent emotional abuse?

Preventing emotional abuse requires support at many levels.

For children, this means learning to recognize feelings, manage stress, and see healthy communication modeled in their environment.

As they grow into youth and adulthood, prevention becomes awareness and choice: recognizing harmful patterns, setting healthy boundaries, and discovering new ways to relate.
